📰 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Monday's "real ceasefire" didn't hold — the conflict has escalated sharply. Iran launched a "surprise attack" on US forces in Jordan and other countries Wednesday; the US and Saudi Arabia responded with strikes on Iranian-backed forces in Iraq that killed at least 20. Overnight, the US completed a "heavy wave of strikes" against Iran, and Tehran has vowed to "punish" the US in response. Trump had told Fox News the US would "beat the [expletive] out of them." This is a real reversal from Monday's genuine pause, not just rhetoric.

Yesterday's FOMC decision held rates, but markets sold off hard anyway. The Fed voted 9-3 to keep rates at 3.50%-3.75% for a fifth straight meeting — three regional presidents (Hammack, Kashkari, Logan) dissented in favor of a hike. Despite the hold, the Dow fell more than 800 points (-1.6%) and the S&P and Nasdaq both dropped roughly 0.5-0.6% during Chair Warsh's press conference. Long-end yields rose (10-year +5bps to 4.657%, 30-year +9bps to 5.193%) even as the 2-year fell — exactly the "hawkish tone matters more than the number" dynamic we discussed earlier this week.

Meta crashed, Microsoft surged — the same earnings season, opposite outcomes. Meta is down ~9.9% (2.1x normal options volume) after missing Q2 EPS estimates and guiding Q3 revenue to $61-64B (midpoint $62.5B, below the ~$63.15B analysts expected). Microsoft is up ~9.3% (2.3x normal options volume) on a clean beat. Apple reports after today's close.

AMD is up ~5.5% (2.1x normal options volume) and Nebius is up ~10% (2.3x volume), both extending this summer's AI-infrastructure volatility. Starbucks is up ~4.0% (2.7x volume) on what looks like an earnings beat.

🎯 MOMENTUM PLAYS TO WATCH — Confirmed by Options Flow

META — Down ~9.9% on 2.1x normal options volume — a real, confirmed earnings miss, not just guidance caution.

MSFT — Up ~9.3% on 2.3x normal options volume — the clearest confirmed bullish signal of the morning.

QCOM & NOW — Down 3.9-4.0%, both confirmed by 2.7-2.9x normal options volume — real weakness away from the Meta/Microsoft story.

AMD & NBIS — Up 5.5% and 10.0% respectively, both confirmed by 2.1-2.3x normal options volume.

📅 TODAY'S CALENDAR

Apple reports after today's close. Watch for further Iran-related headlines and any oil price follow-through given the overnight strikes.

TRADER'S NOTE

Two very different stories are colliding this morning: a real geopolitical escalation that reverses Monday's optimism, and a genuine Big Tech earnings divergence (Meta's real miss vs. Microsoft's real beat). Worth treating these as separate threads rather than one narrative — the market's reaction to each will likely diverge as the day goes on.
