📰 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
SpaceX's first-ever earnings as a public company beat big — and the stock is down ~11.6% anyway. Revenue hit $7.81B (vs. ~$6.93B estimated, +92% YoY), the net loss narrowed to $541M from $1B, and Starlink subscribers doubled year-over-year to 12 million. But capital expenditures jumped more than sixfold to $18.37B, with $15.83B specifically going toward AI infrastructure — exceeding the $13.22B analysts expected. Same pattern we've now seen repeatedly this earnings season: a real beat, undone by spending that raises questions about near-term returns. A large tranche of insider shares (up to 911.5 million, worth roughly $100B+ at current prices) unlocks tomorrow, adding further selling-pressure risk.
AMD told the identical story. Revenue of $11.54B beat the $11.35B estimate (+50% YoY), EPS of $1.66 beat $1.61, and Q3 guidance of $13B beat the $12.63B consensus — genuinely across-the-board strong. Shares are still down ~7.7%, largely because gross margin came in at 54% (below the 56% target) as the ramp of its new Helios AI rack system creates near-term margin pressure, on top of a stock already up 140%+ this year heading into the report.
Shopify is up ~23.4% (2.5x normal options volume) — the standout positive mover of the morning, in sharp contrast to the spending-driven selloffs elsewhere.
Arista Networks is up ~10.3% (4.0x normal options volume), and Alphabet is up ~1.4% (2.2x volume) — both genuine bright spots today.
Palantir is essentially flat after yesterday's ~15% surge, but still showing 6.7x normal options volume — the highest relative options activity of any name on our scan, real ongoing positioning a day after its big move.
🎯 MOMENTUM PLAYS TO WATCH — Confirmed by Options Flow
SPCX — Down ~11.6% on 4.0x normal options volume — a real beat, undone by capex concerns, heading into tomorrow's major lockup expiration.
AMD — Down ~7.7% on 3.0x normal options volume — the same across-the-board beat, punished on margin pressure from Helios ramp costs.
SHOP — Up ~23.4% on 2.5x normal options volume — the clearest confirmed bullish signal today.
ANET — Up ~10.3% on 4.0x normal options volume — a genuine standout away from the earnings-season spending narrative.
📅 TODAY'S CALENDAR
SpaceX's insider share lockup begins unlocking tomorrow (Thursday, August 6) — worth watching for continued selling pressure. Light on major scheduled US data today.
⚡ TRADER'S NOTE
This earnings season has developed a very clear pattern: genuinely strong results are getting punished whenever spending or margin guidance raises doubts about near-term returns. Apple, TSMC, SpaceX, and AMD have all now followed this exact script. Worth remembering heading into any future report this quarter — the headline beat is necessary but nowhere close to sufficient anymore.
